Cross-compilation for constrained ARM environments

Context

This note comes from a technical challenge: preparing tools for a hardened ARM environment where standard utilities and a local development toolchain were not available.

Cross-compilation moves the build process to a separate environment while targeting the execution environment’s architecture and runtime constraints.

Engineering considerations

A successful build on the host is not sufficient. Architecture, ABI, library compatibility and runtime behavior need to match the target.

The guide shares the build approach and recipes. It does not disclose a client’s internal configuration or claim that cross-compilation, by itself, establishes the safety of a tool.

Practical perspective

When preparing audit tooling, keep the build process repeatable and separate tool validation from the security assessment itself. Test only within an authorized scope and account for the target’s operational constraints.
