HSMs: protecting keys beyond the algorithm
Why key protection matters
A strong cryptographic algorithm offers little protection if its secret keys can be extracted or used without authorization. A hardware security module places cryptographic operations and key protection behind a dedicated boundary.
What the architecture must still decide
- Which keys are generated inside the boundary, and which may be imported or exported?
- Which applications and operators may invoke cryptographic operations?
- How are privileged roles separated and audited?
- What are the backup, recovery and replacement procedures?
Practical perspective
An HSM is a component, not a complete security architecture. Its integration, access policy and operational processes remain part of the assurance argument.
The detailed note introduces HSMs in the context of PKI and the chain of trust. It complements my writing on PKCS#11, the interface used by many applications to access cryptographic tokens.
